The European consortium QUARTERNEXT has officially announced the launch of a four-year project aimed at developing and certifying quantum key distribution (QKD) systems. The initiative is coordinated by the Spanish company Luxquanta, with participants including technological giants such as Quside, Chilas, fragmentiX, Telefónica, and the Austrian Institute of Technology. This is not just another scientific experiment—it is a strategic step toward building a secure communication infrastructure for the future.

Funding and Strategy

The project is funded under the Digital Europe program and fits seamlessly into the broader European initiative EuroQCI, which aims to create a quantum-secure communication network across the continent. The team's key focus is on CV-QKD (Continuous-Variable Quantum Key Distribution) technology. Unlike more complex and expensive discrete methods, CV-QKD allows cryptographic keys to be transmitted over standard fiber-optic networks using fundamental quantum effects.

The essence of the technology is simple and ingenious: any attempt to intercept or eavesdrop on the channel inevitably destroys the quantum state, and the sender instantly learns of the breach. Thus, encryption becomes absolutely resistant—even against attacks from quantum computers, which will soon be able to crack modern RSA algorithms in minutes.

For the crypto industry and blockchain sector, this event has direct implications. Quantum computing poses an existential threat to current digital signature and consensus mechanisms.
