Two NHS trusts are beginning clinical use of the innovative PinPoint AI blood test for women with suspected uterine cancer. This represents a breakthrough that could fundamentally change the diagnostic algorithm in gynecology.

In a large-scale study involving 3,313 patients, the machine learning model demonstrated 99% accuracy in both detecting and ruling out gynecological cancers. Every year in England, around 90,000 women are referred for examination due to heavy postmenopausal bleeding. Of these, approximately 10,000 are diagnosed with uterine (endometrial) cancer, and 2,700 patients die from the disease annually.

The current standard procedure includes transvaginal ultrasound to measure endometrial thickness, followed by biopsy and hysteroscopy if suspicions remain. Many women find these methods painful and invasive. Meanwhile, 20% of those referred do not have cancer confirmed. According to the developers, the new test will allow the disease to be ruled out at the initial consultation stage, sparing around 18,000 women per year from unnecessary procedures.

How PinPoint technology works

The PinPoint algorithm analyzes 30 biomarkers in a blood sample, based on which the model classifies risk as low, elevated, or high. The technology was developed by PinPoint Data Science, a company based in Leeds specializing in statistical analysis of medical data.

Implementation began after a trial involving 16,481 patients. General practitioners from 170 clinics in Yorkshire referred them for testing for nine types of cancer. Among them were 3,313 women with bleeding and suspected uterine cancer. PinPoint Data Science's Chief Medical Officer, Sean Duffy, emphasized: "99% accuracy is outstanding by any clinical standards. But equally important is that the test reliably rules out cancer in women with low risk."

Mid Yorkshire NHS Teaching Trust plans to use the test for six types of gynecological cancer and upper gastrointestinal cancer. Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust will implement it for gynecological cancers. Doctors note that currently, ruling out cancer requires up to six patient visits, and PinPoint will speed up the process and free up time for other patients. Consultant gynecologist Tracy Jackson from Leeds Trust stated: "Women who actually have cancer will see a doctor faster, receive a diagnosis, and start treatment. That is where our focus should be."

Cancer Research UK called the results "promising," but the organization's representative, Samantha Harrison, emphasized the need for further research to assess the benefits for patients and the healthcare system.

Expert opinion: The use of AI for blood-based screening is not just an evolution but a revolution in diagnostics. The ability to rule out cancer with 99% accuracy without invasive interventions dramatically reduces the burden on the healthcare system and improves patients' quality of life. However, the key challenge remains scaling such solutions and integrating them into routine clinical practice. If the data is confirmed in broader cohorts, we will witness a new era of personalized oncology.
