The Zcash development team is preparing to activate a major network upgrade called Ironwood. The event is scheduled for July 28, approximately at 08:00 AM Eastern Time (EST). Activation will occur at block height #3,428,143.
Key feature of Ironwood — closing the current private Orchard pool and creating a new shielded pool. This step is directly related to a vulnerability discovered in May in the Orchard protocol. The issue was theoretical in nature but could have allowed attackers to create counterfeit ZEC coins.
The process of migrating funds from the old pool to the new one will be accompanied by a mandatory accounting check. This will allow developers to obtain important data: if the bug was exploited before the fix, characteristic signs of illegitimate transactions will appear when funds are withdrawn.
