The Ethereum Foundation has unveiled a large-scale technological development plan for the network, designed for implementation by 2029. The Lean Ethereum concept is not just a set of targeted improvements, but a comprehensive overhaul of the protocol architecture, comparable in depth to the transition to Proof-of-Stake. In this analysis, I will break down the key stages of the roadmap, its ambitious goals, and the community's reaction.

Global Transformation: From "The Merge" to "Lean"

At the end of June, Ethereum researchers held a strategic meeting in Berlin where they formed a long-term development trajectory. The result was the publication of the so-called "strawmap," presented by network co-founder Vitalik Buterin. The document describes the largest architectural transformation since The Merge, affecting virtually all key elements of the system.

The modernization has gone beyond incremental upgrades. Developers have announced a full-scale restructuring aimed at accelerating the blockchain, reducing fees, enhancing anonymity, and protecting the network from quantum threats. Implementation will take three to four years.

Five "Guiding Stars": Goals of Lean Ethereum

The roadmap outlines five key goals around which the entire restructuring is built:

  1. Accelerating the base layer. Currently, an Ethereum slot is created in 12 seconds, and finalization takes about 16 minutes. A phased reduction to 8, 6, 4, and possibly 2 seconds is planned.
  2. Increasing L1 throughput. The goal is to achieve approximately 10,000 TPS through the implementation of zkEVM and real-time proof generation.
  3. Scaling L2. The bar here is significantly higher — up to the "teragas" level, equivalent to roughly 10 million TPS. This will become possible thanks to a new approach to data availability.
  4. Implementing post-quantum protection. Traditional cryptographic algorithms will be replaced with hash-based solutions resistant to attacks from quantum computers.
  5. Privacy. Developers intend to implement hidden ETH transfers, allowing funds to be sent without revealing details on the public blockchain.

A key element of the restructuring will be the new consensus mechanism Minimmit, which should accelerate finalization by 120 times — from 16 minutes to 8 seconds.

Glamsterdam and Hegota: Upcoming Upgrades

After The Merge, Ethereum updates receive compound names. The next in this chain are Glamsterdam and Hegota. The first update is expected in the second half of 2026. Its key components: the ePBS mechanism (splitting block proposal and attestation tasks) and Block-Level Access Lists (BAL), which will increase the gas limit and reduce costs. The Hegota upgrade, according to Buterin, will be the last "before the Lean era."

Cryptography, Consensus, and Speed: Technical Details

One of the most notable changes is the replacement of classical verification with recursive STARK proofs. This system will become the network's basic computational component, eliminating the need for each node to re-execute operations. Confidentiality has been elevated to a top priority: the design of the mempool and other components incorporates the possibility of protected transfers compatible with post-quantum protection.

The Ethereum Foundation plans to complete the transition to quantum-resistant algorithms by 2029. As an interim solution, the SPHINCS+ method has been proposed, allowing accounts to be secured for just $0.07 without a full-scale hard fork.

The Most Controversial Part: State Storage Overhaul

Buterin called the overhaul of data storage for balances, accounts, and smart contracts the most radical part of the plan. The idea is to keep the dynamic state almost unchanged while adding new types of storage designed for a much larger volume alongside it. By 2030, the picture could look like this: about 2 TB of old-type state and up to 100 TB of new-type state. Moving an ERC-20 token to the new UTXO-based storage scheme would reduce fees by more than ten times.

Community Reaction: Enthusiasm vs. Fatigue

In the crypto industry, the plan was generally received positively. StarkWare co-founder Eli Ben-Sasson praised the focus on recursive STARKs and quantum security but called the timeline too long. Former Ethereum Foundation researcher Dankrad Feist suggested completing it within a year, pointing to AI tools as a potential accelerator.
