Over the past weekend, two titans of the artificial intelligence industry—Elon Musk and Sam Altman—once again clashed in a public verbal duel on platform X. The conflict flared up just a few days after Apple filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, accusing the company of stealing trade secrets.
The exchange between the billionaires, whose companies are direct competitors in the AI race, escalated into a series of sharp jabs. This occurred against an already tense backdrop: earlier this year, Musk lost a legal proceeding in which he attempted to challenge OpenAI's transition to a commercial model. The judge at that time ruled that his lawsuit was filed too late.
Old Enmity with Renewed Vigor
As a reminder, Musk was one of the co-founders of OpenAI in 2015 but left the board of directors in 2018 after an unsuccessful attempt to gain control of the lab. Since then, relations between the former partners have only worsened, especially after SpaceX conducted a record IPO, and OpenAI, in turn, filed for its own listing. Competition between their AI developments—xAI (with the Grok model) and OpenAI (with GPT)—has reached its peak.
A new round of the conflict was triggered by the news of Apple's lawsuit. Musk reacted instantly, publishing a series of sarcastic posts on X in which he effectively called Altman a fraud. He also hinted that "Scam Altman is at it again."
Altman did not hold back. He retorted that the release of their newest model, GPT-5.6, coincided with the launch of Grok 4.5 from xAI. "There are quite a few tests where 5.6 shows the best results among all models, but the most reliable sign of this is that Elon won't leave me alone," he wrote, hinting at Musk's obsession with his company.
The head of X product, Nikita Bier, also joined the discussion, ironically commenting on OpenAI's "trade secrets" in the context of the proceedings with Apple.
My analysis: This public spat is not just a personal feud between two billionaires. It reflects a fierce struggle for dominance in the AI market, where every new lawsuit or legal proceeding becomes a tool of competitive rivalry. Apple's lawsuit against OpenAI adds another layer of uncertainty, and Musk, as Altman's main antagonist, uses every opportunity to weaken his chief competitor's position.
