The high-tech industry is taking another step toward the quantum era. Quantum system developer Quantinuum, together with legendary aircraft engine manufacturer Rolls-Royce, has initiated a multi-year project aimed at studying hybrid quantum-classical computing. The partnership also includes Riverlane, a company specializing in quantum error correction, and the EPCC supercomputing center at the University of Edinburgh.
The consortium's goal is to determine exactly what capabilities of quantum computers will be needed to solve future industrial design challenges. This is not about fully transferring simulations to a quantum platform, but about testing individual, most resource-intensive computing components.
Why is this important for aviation?
Calculations of gas flow inside turbines are among the most complex tasks in modern engineering. As model accuracy increases, so do the demands on computing power, which become critical even for supercomputers. Project participants will test whether future fault-tolerant quantum systems can take on part of these calculations, working in tandem with classical HPC clusters.
Quantinuum will provide access to its quantum systems and software environment. Rolls-Royce will formulate specific industrial tasks, Riverlane will develop algorithms and error correction systems, and EPCC will ensure integration with high-performance computing resources. Initial tests will be conducted on the Helios quantum computer, after which the partners will assess the scalability of solutions on future Quantinuum systems — Sol and Apollo.
This project is part of the UK's national quantum strategy. By 2035, the government aims to provide access to systems capable of performing 1 trillion quantum operations and solving industrial-scale problems in conjunction with supercomputers.
Against the backdrop of this collaboration, Quantinuum has updated its IPO filing, setting a price range of $45–50 per share. The company plans to place 21,052,632 Class A securities on Nasdaq, which, under current parameters, would result in a valuation of $11.43–12.7 billion. For comparison, in June, IBM presented a roadmap according to which the first large-scale fault-tolerant quantum computer will appear by 2029.
