The high-tech industry is taking another step toward the practical application of quantum computers. Quantinuum, a leader in quantum system development, together with aviation engine giant Rolls-Royce, is launching a multi-year project to study hybrid quantum-classical computing. Experts in quantum error correction from Riverlane and the EPCC supercomputing center at the University of Edinburgh have also joined the initiative.

The main goal of the partners is to determine exactly what computing capabilities of quantum platforms will be required to solve real-world industrial design problems. This is not about a complete transfer of simulations to a quantum architecture, but about testing and optimizing individual critical components of computations. Of particular interest is modeling gas flow inside turbines—a task requiring enormous resources, especially as model accuracy increases.

The project participants intend to test whether future fault-tolerant quantum computers can efficiently perform part of such calculations in tandem with traditional supercomputers. Quantinuum will provide access to its quantum systems and software environment, Rolls-Royce will prepare industrial tasks, Riverlane will handle algorithm development and quantum error correction, and EPCC will ensure integration with high-performance computing systems.

The first algorithm components will be tested on the Helios quantum computer. If successful, the partners will assess the possibility of scaling solutions to future Quantinuum systems—Sol and Apollo. This project is directly linked to the UK's national quantum computing development program. By 2035, the country's government plans to provide access to systems capable of performing 1 trillion quantum operations and solving industrially significant problems in conjunction with supercomputers.

It is worth noting that Quantinuum is also actively preparing to enter the public market. The company has updated its IPO application, setting a price range of $45–50 per share. It plans to place 21,052,632 Class A securities on the Nasdaq, which could value the company at $11.43–12.7 billion. This further confirms the growing investor interest in quantum technologies.

My expert opinion: The collaboration between Quantinuum and Rolls-Royce is not just another PR project. It is the first serious attempt to integrate quantum computing into a real production cycle. If the hybrid approach proves effective in modeling gas flows, we will witness a tectonic shift in industrial design. Quantum computers will cease to be a laboratory curiosity and will become a working tool for engineers.
