Anthropic, the developer of the AI model Claude, faced a serious billing system failure. Due to an error in auto-recharge settings, a user on the free plan from South Korea received an astronomical bill of $16.6 million. The incident revealed systemic issues in AI service billing that affect even large corporations.

The events unfolded in early July. A developer under the pseudonym remy_notes, without linking a payment card or using the API, first discovered a bill for $1.67 million in their personal account, and then one for $16.6 million. The amount increased tenfold without any action from the user. Initially, they suspected phishing, but the emails came from Anthropic's official domain via the Stripe payment service.

How did Anthropic explain the error?

The company acknowledged the failure and assured that no actual funds were debited. The cause was attributed to an error in the auto-recharge credit settings, which have since been disabled. However, Anthropic did not explain why the auto-recharge amount reached such absurd values. The user's bank rejected two debit attempts on July 8, as the amounts exceeded the card limit, but after several attempts, the primary card was still blocked.

The problem is broader than it seems

Resolving the issue took four days and required about 18 emails. Instead of a specific response, the user received automated replies. This case is not isolated. Startup Vaudit checked $34 million in AI service bills for 60 major clients and discovered overpayments of approximately $1.7 million (about 5% of the total amount). Among the affected companies were Panasonic, HP, and Honda. The largest errors are attributed to billing for AI-based solutions.

Conclusions for users

This incident is a stark reminder that even leading AI companies are not immune to technical failures. My recommendation: regularly check your payment panels, monitor bank notifications, and respond promptly to unexpected debits. In an era where AI services are becoming an integral part of business, a random glitch can turn into a serious financial problem. Stay vigilant and keep your finger on the pulse.
