Warner Bros. is preparing to release the film "The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum," and it has become known that artificial intelligence will be actively used in the film's production. Director Andy Serkis has officially confirmed that machine learning technologies will be part of the process — primarily for digitally de-aging actors.

It is important to emphasize: this is not an experiment with fully generated frames or replacing live actors with CGI models. Serkis stated that the film will retain traditional filming methods, and AI will be used exclusively as a post-production tool. This involves subtle work with visual effects, allowing the "erasure" of age-related changes from the faces of actors who will return to their roles more than 25 years after the release of "The Fellowship of the Ring."

It has not yet been officially announced who exactly will be de-aged. However, among the likely candidates are Elijah Wood (Frodo) and Sir Ian McKellen (Gandalf). Both actors are significantly older than their characters from the original trilogy, and without digital correction, their appearance in the prequel would look unnatural.

From an industry perspective, this is a landmark step. Major studios are increasingly turning to AI solutions to address the problem of "age mismatch" in franchises. However, I would note that the success of this approach directly depends on the quality of the source material and the accuracy of the algorithms. Any error in texturing or facial muscle animation could trigger the "uncanny valley" effect, instantly breaking the viewer's immersion.

In my opinion, the use of AI in this context is a reasonable compromise between the desire to retain the original actors and the objective limitations of human aging. The main thing is that the technology remains a tool, not a replacement for the director's vision. If Serkis manages to maintain this balance, we will get not just a nostalgic attraction, but a technically flawless continuation of the iconic saga.
