A detailed analysis of recent financial disclosures shows that Donald Trump is pursuing a highly pragmatic strategy regarding digital assets. Despite his vocal public support for the crypto industry, the bulk of his personal capital is by no means concentrated in volatile coins. The former, and possibly future, U.S. president has reinvested the lion's share of his profits from the crypto market into traditional instruments — stocks and bonds.
Fourfold Growth of Traditional Portfolio
According to the documents I reviewed, the value of Trump's stock and bond portfolio has increased at least fourfold over the past two years. While this range was estimated at $225–608 million at the end of 2024, by the end of 2025 it stood between $703 million and $2.6 billion. This is a colossal leap, clearly indicating a systematic transfer of liquidity from one asset class to another.
Former Chairman of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) Timothy Massad rightly notes that such reporting reveals a clear strategy: quickly locking in profits from cryptocurrencies and subsequently moving capital into more conservative instruments. This is the behavior of an experienced investor who uses high-risk assets to generate income but does not hold their principal funds in them.
"Despite the president's statements about the prospects of digital assets, the reports show he uses cryptocurrencies for quick profits and then transfers the proceeds into traditional instruments like stocks and bonds," Massad emphasizes.
It is important to understand that these investment decisions are likely not made by Trump personally. The White House explained that his assets are held in a fully discretionary account managed by independent third-party organizations. Nevertheless, the overall picture remains telling.
Trump's Crypto Assets: More Than Meets the Eye
Despite transferring profits into traditional securities, Trump still maintains significant positions in digital assets. By the end of 2025, his companies' balance sheets held Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) worth at least $160 million. This is notably higher than the $1–5 million in ETH he reported a year earlier.
Additionally, he retains 15.75 billion WLFI governance tokens worth over $50 million. Interestingly, the disclosures did not mention the purchase of shares in two public crypto companies supported by his sons — Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr.
Political Tensions Over Crypto Income
Political tensions are rising around Trump's income from crypto projects. Over the past year, he declared over $1.4 billion in revenue from family crypto ventures, including World Liberty Financial (WLFI) and his own memecoin.
For private investors, the picture is far bleaker. According to my data, nearly 1 million holders of Official Trump (TRUMP) are suffering a collective loss of $3.81 billion. The disclosure of the president's crypto asset data has already raised questions in the Senate over potential conflicts of interest. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand has again proposed banning the president, members of Congress, and their spouses from issuing memecoins. The debate around the issue is intensifying — economist Peter Schiff has called such tokens "legal bribes."
My expert opinion: Trump's strategy is a classic example of diversification with a priority on capital preservation. He uses cryptocurrencies as a high-yield but temporary tool for generating profits, then locks them into more stable assets. This is a signal for retail investors: even the biggest crypto enthusiast in politics doesn't put all their eggs in one basket. Questions of ethics and conflicts of interest surrounding his memecoins remain open, and regulation of this sphere will likely tighten.
