In the upcoming film "The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum," artificial intelligence will become part of the production process—not for generating content from scratch, but for digitally de-aging actors. Director Andy Serkis has officially confirmed that machine learning technologies will be used to process footage featuring returning performers.

More than 25 years have passed since the filming of the original "Fellowship of the Ring" trilogy. Among the actors whose faces may be de-aged are Elijah Wood (Frodo) and Ian McKellen (Gandalf). The exact list of characters subject to digital correction has not yet been disclosed. However, it is clear that without AI tools, achieving a convincing visual match to the characters from 20 years ago would be extremely difficult.

It is important to emphasize: according to Serkis, the film will not be created solely with AI. Traditional filming methods, practical effects, and live acting remain the foundation of the project. Machine learning serves only as an auxiliary tool—similar to how deepfake technology or neural network filters are already used in the industry for de-aging (recall "Indiana Jones 5" or "The Mandalorian").

From my perspective, this step is a logical evolution, not a revolution. The industry has long balanced between spectacle and budget, and AI allows solving the problem of actors' age-related changes without expensive CGI doubles.
