In the upcoming film "The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum," machine learning will be actively used for the digital de-aging of actors. Director Andy Serkis has officially confirmed that AI technologies will become an integral part of post-production, but emphasized that the film will not be entirely synthetic — traditional filming methods will remain at its core.

More than 25 years have passed since the release of "The Fellowship of the Ring." This means that for key actors such as Elijah Wood (Frodo) and Ian McKellen (Gandalf), returning to their roles without digital correction would be impossible. Serkis, who is also known for his work on character movement in the trilogy, did not reveal which actors will undergo de-aging, but it is clear that AI will be indispensable here.

From my perspective, this is a landmark step for the industry. Using machine learning for de-aging is no longer an experiment but a working tool that allows preserving the visual continuity and authenticity of characters. However, it is important that the creators do not succumb to the temptation of completely replacing live acting with algorithms. This is a reasonable balance between innovation and respect for the original material.
