The crypto community was on edge for several hours following reports of an alleged hack of wallets belonging to the cross-chain communication protocol LayerZero. However, it turned out to be a false alarm. The movement of $2.4 million in funds, initially mistaken for a hacker attack, was a routine internal protocol operation to consolidate assets.
The situation developed rapidly. Analysts from the security service PeckShield were the first to raise the alarm, detecting suspicious activity from LayerZero's Executor wallets. According to their observations, funds were withdrawn from several networks, including BNB Chain, Base, Arbitrum, Avalanche, Optimism, Mantle, Plasma, and Ethereum. The majority of what was thought to be stolen was converted into 956 ETH (approximately $1.79 million) and $322,000 in USDC, then sent to the Ethereum network.
Other observers, including WuBlockchain and analyst Zacharia Sharif, also confirmed this version, estimating the potential damage at around $2.1 million. It seemed we were dealing with yet another major attack on an infrastructure protocol.
Denial from Developers
However, the panic did not last long. LayerZero developers promptly refuted all suspicions. In an official statement, the protocol emphasized that the funds were withdrawn from internal wallets as part of standard asset operations, and "nothing is at risk." Project co-founder Bryan Pellegrino also publicly stated that he did not understand how or why this story emerged, as it was merely a "routine consolidation of assets."
Independent experts, particularly analyst Crypto Patel, confirmed this version, calling the reports of a $2.4 million hack a false alarm. The service Verdict noted that the incident caused the market to panic for about four hours: "956 ETH moved, headlines appeared, and some protocols paused operations."
Analyst's opinion: This incident is an excellent lesson for the entire market. It clearly demonstrates how quickly panic can spread due to misinterpretation of data. In the DeFi world, where blockchain transparency allows tracking every movement of funds, it is crucial to verify information before making loud statements. Hasty conclusions can cause reputational damage to projects and trigger unjustified volatility. The main takeaway from this story is to trust but verify, and not to succumb to herd mentality.
