We are witnessing a historic moment in the evolution of digital payments. Under the auspices of the Linux Foundation, the x402 Foundation has officially launched, bringing together over 40 key players from the global financial and technology ecosystem. Participants include giants such as Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Ripple, Stripe, Google, Amazon Web Services, Cloudflare, Circle, Shopify, as well as the Solana and Stellar foundations. The x402 protocol itself, originally developed within Coinbase, has now been transferred to the neutral governance of the foundation.
The essence of the initiative is to create a universal, open standard for conducting transactions between AI agents, APIs, and applications without human intervention. The protocol embeds secure payment functions directly into HTTP interactions, making financial operations as simple as data exchange. This is not just an update—it is laying the foundation for a new economic model.
Why this changes the game
Until now, artificial intelligence has had no "native" way to pay. AI agents can perform complex tasks, but they have neither bank cards nor wallets in the traditional sense. x402 solves this problem by allowing programs to pay for services of other programs in real time. As rightly noted by Circle, in conjunction with USDC and x402, agents will be able to conduct payments in seconds with fees of fractions of a cent.
The key advantage is neutrality. The foundation under the Linux Foundation ensures that the standard will not be tied to a single provider or technology. It supports both traditional cards and stablecoins, which is critically important for global compatibility. Ripple has already ensured support for x402 on the XRP Ledger, allowing agents to operate in XRP and RLUSD.
The massive participation of players such as Visa, Mastercard, and Stripe is a powerful signal to the market. This is not an experiment but a mature infrastructure initiative. Essentially, we are witnessing the birth of a payment layer for the era of the machine economy, where AI agents will become full-fledged economic entities.
Expert opinion: Consolidation around a single open standard is the only path to scaling payments between AI agents. Closed protocols of individual companies will not be able to provide the necessary level of compatibility and trust. x402, with the support of such a consortium, has every chance of becoming the "HTTP for money" in the world of artificial intelligence.
