The cryptocurrency and traditional finance industries are taking a historic step towards the era of autonomous machine payments. Under the auspices of the Linux Foundation, the x402 Foundation has been officially launched, bringing together more than 40 key market players. Participants include titans such as Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Ripple, Stripe, Google, Amazon Web Services, Cloudflare, as well as crypto giants Circle, MoonPay, and the Solana and Stellar foundations.
What is the x402 Protocol?
The x402 protocol, originally developed by the Coinbase team, is a universal standard for conducting payments over HTTP. Its key innovation is embedding secure financial transactions directly into the interaction process of software and applications. This means that AI agents, APIs, and other automated systems will be able to make payments as easily as they currently exchange data. In effect, we are witnessing the birth of a "native" payment layer for the internet, which no longer requires human involvement in every microtransaction.
A Unified Ecosystem for the Machine Economy
Transferring the protocol under the neutral governance of the Linux Foundation signals market maturity. As noted by RippleX Senior Vice President Markus Infanger, the company has already ensured support for x402 on the XRP Ledger, allowing agents to conduct transactions in both XRP and the RLUSD stablecoin. Circle emphasized that, in conjunction with USDC, agents will be able to make payments in seconds and for fractions of a cent. Visa and Mastercard noted that the future of commerce is built on interoperability, not on a single protocol or payment method. Stripe, for its part, stated that it is creating an economic infrastructure that will allow businesses to accept payments from agents and turn the agents themselves into full-fledged participants in the economy.
This is not just a technical update. It is a fundamental shift. We are moving from a world where people pay to a world where programs pay. And the fact that competitors like Visa and Ripple have sat down at the same negotiating table speaks to the enormous potential of this market.
