The largest payment giants and blockchain ecosystems have joined forces to give artificial intelligence its own "wallet." This refers to the launch of the x402 Foundation under the auspices of the Linux Foundation — an initiative that has already attracted 40 participants and promises to revolutionize the way programs will pay each other.

The x402 Protocol: HTTP for Money

The core idea of x402 is to embed secure payments directly into the process of online interaction. Essentially, it is a universal standard built on top of HTTP, allowing AI agents, APIs, and applications to conduct financial transactions as easily as exchanging data. This solves a fundamental problem: until now, artificial intelligence has lacked a "native" and secure way to pay for its actions.

The premier participants of the foundation include Ripple, Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Stripe, Adyen, Fiserv, Shopify, Google, Amazon Web Services, Cloudflare, Circle, and MoonPay. Support has also come from the Solana and Stellar foundations. Circle focuses on speed: paired with USDC and x402, agents will be able to make payments in seconds at a cost of fractions of a cent. Ripple has already provided support for x402 on the XRP Ledger, allowing agents to operate in XRP and RLUSD. Markus Infanger, Senior Vice President of RippleX, stated that the company sees this standard as the key to scaling machine payments.

Visa and Mastercard emphasize the importance of interoperability. "Commerce won't work on a single agent, protocol, or payment method," said Rubaïl Birwadker from Visa. "The future is built on mutual interoperability." Mastercard linked the initiative to its own Agent Pay for Machines service, which helps unlock the potential of machine payments at scale.
