Despite mixed quarterly results, tech giant IBM continues to adhere to its ambitious plan to invest over $10 billion in quantum technologies. This previously announced five-year budget remains unchanged, with the primary goal of creating a large-scale fault-tolerant quantum computer still targeted for 2029.

The funds will be allocated across four key areas: fundamental research in quantum physics and error correction, production of new chips, strategic acquisitions of promising startups, and development of the developer ecosystem. For the crypto industry, this is a signal that cannot be ignored: quantum computing is not a distant futuristic threat, but a maturing reality capable of challenging the security of existing cryptographic standards, including ECDSA, on which Bitcoin is built.

IBM's announcement came amid weak preliminary results for the second quarter of 2026. The company's total revenue grew only 1% to $17.2 billion. The software segment showed modest growth of 5%, the consulting division remained flat, and the infrastructure business declined by as much as 7%. Against this backdrop, the decision to maintain the $10 billion quantum budget appears as a demonstration of long-term strategic commitment rather than a fleeting whim.

My view as an analyst: The market underestimates the speed at which the quantum threshold is approaching. IBM, Google, and IonQ are already demonstrating prototypes with thousands of qubits, but the key challenge—error correction—remains the bottleneck. If IBM solves this problem by 2029, the crypto community will have to accelerate the transition to post-quantum cryptography much faster than current roadmaps suggest. This is not a question of "if," but a question of "when."
