The military technology market is entering a new phase. On July 17, Foundation Future Industries, a company specializing in the creation of humanoid robots, announced its intention to integrate weapon systems into its machines. The first prototypes are expected to be unveiled in the coming months.
The startup's key investor and strategic advisor is Eric Trump, the son of the current US president. This gives the project not only technological but also political weight. Foundation positions its humanoids as a universal platform for logistics, reconnaissance, inspection, and, most importantly, for participation in combat operations.
The current version of the robot, the Phantom MK-1, is still far from ideal for the battlefield. Key limitations include insufficient battery capacity, lack of protection from external factors (water, dust), and unstable operation with complex objects. However, this does not prevent the company from announcing plans to equip the machines with weapons.
"Kinetic Solutions" and Autonomy
Foundation CEO Sanket Pathak did not disclose the exact specifications of the weaponry but confirmed that the company is exploring "several kinetic solutions." This term implies the development of weapon systems capable of turning the humanoid into a combat unit. For now, these are just plans, but the development vector is clear.
An important nuance is fire control. According to Pathak, in most scenarios, the decision to engage will be made by a human. The exception will be systems requiring an instantaneous reaction, such as intercepting drones or missiles. Thus, Foundation does not completely rule out the autonomous use of force, which raises serious ethical questions.
Technical Maturity and Expert Skepticism
The Phantom MK-1 has a height of 175 cm, a weight of 80 kg, and can carry up to 20 kg of cargo. The next version, the MK-2, is expected to have water and dust protection, but its release is planned only for 2026. Besides protection, power supply and manipulator control remain acute problems. Holding a weapon is one thing, but working with a safety catch or reloading under fire is a task of an entirely different level of complexity.
Leading experts in robotics are skeptical. Professor Rodney Brooks of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a recognized pioneer in the field, argues that reliable operation of humanoids in a complex, unfamiliar environment is a matter of at least a decade. This statement directly contradicts Foundation's ambitious plans to begin military deployment of the machines within 12–18 months.
Contracts and Political Undertones
The history of financing deserves special attention. Earlier, media reported a $24 million contract with the Pentagon, which was presented as a direct achievement of Foundation. However, a detailed analysis shows that this amount is made up of several inherited and related projects, rather than being a single new contract. The only confirmed contract from the US Air Force, worth $1.8 million, went to Boardwalk Robotics, which Foundation subsequently acquired.
Against the backdrop of this news, Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren has already called the president's son's ties to a defense contractor "corruption in plain sight." The situation is becoming explosive not only from a technological but also from a political standpoint.
My analysis: For now, Foundation's statements look more like aggressive marketing and an attempt to capitalize on political capital. The technology of humanoid combat robots is still in its infancy. Even if a prototype with a weapon is shown in the coming months, real combat deployment and reliable operation are years, if not decades, away. Investors and the market should be extremely cautious about loud promises not backed by real technical results.
