On July 17, humanoid robot manufacturer Foundation Future Industries announced plans to integrate weapon systems into its machines. The first prototypes could be unveiled within the next couple of months, according to co-founder and CEO Sanket Pathak. The startup, whose investor and chief strategic advisor is Eric Trump, son of the U.S. president, is betting on military applications for humanoids, including logistics, reconnaissance, and combat operations.
The current version of the Phantom MK-1 robot is still far from full-scale combat deployment. Key limitations include insufficient battery capacity for extended operation, lack of water and dust protection, and issues with reliable interaction with complex objects, which is critical for handling weapons.
Weapon Systems: Kinetics and Autonomy
Pathak confirmed that the company is exploring several "kinetic solutions," which directly refer to weapon systems, but specific characteristics and scenarios have not yet been disclosed. An important nuance: in most operations, a human will have to make the decision to open fire. Exceptions will include systems requiring ultra-fast response, such as intercepting drones or missiles. This means Foundation does not rule out fully autonomous use of force in certain scenarios, although no public rules for such functions have been presented yet.
Technical Readiness: From Lab to Battlefield
The technical specifications of the Phantom MK-1 are impressive: height 175 cm, weight 80 kg, payload capacity up to 20 kg. However, as experts note, the transition from a reliable laboratory demonstration to real-world deployment in robotics traditionally takes at least ten years. This assessment sharply contrasts with Foundation's ambitious plans to begin military use of humanoids within 12–18 months. Difficulties with controlling the hands, the need to hold a weapon, reload it, and maintain control during falls remain non-trivial engineering challenges.
Contracts and Funding: $24 Million or a Project Portfolio?
In April, information emerged about a $24 million contract between Foundation and the Pentagon, which Eric Trump actively promoted. However, verification showed that this amount consists of several projects inherited from Boardwalk Robotics and funding through the Institute for Human and Machine Cognition. Essentially, it is a cumulative portfolio rather than a single new contract. The official SBIR registry only confirms a Boardwalk contract with the U.S. Air Force for approximately $1.8 million. Senator Elizabeth Warren has already called the president's son's ties to the defense contractor "corruption in plain sight."
The company's production plans also raise questions. Foundation stated its intention to produce up to 50,000 humanoids by the end of 2027, despite having manufactured only about 40 machines in 2025. Such ambitions require a multiple increase in capacity and significant investment, which so far remains at the level of statements.
My analysis. The situation surrounding Foundation Future Industries is a classic case where high-profile political connections and ambitious statements outpace actual technological capabilities. For now, the Phantom MK-1 is more of an impressive prototype than a combat unit. The main risk for investors and military customers lies not so much in technical limitations as in the gap between stated goals and the real maturity of the technology. The market for humanoid defense robots could become a goldmine, but only for those who can navigate the path from the lab to the trenches without losing trust and budgets.
