On July 17, Foundation Future Industries, a company specializing in creating humanoid robots, officially announced plans to integrate weapon systems into its machines. Co-founder and CEO of the startup, Sanket Pathak, stated that the first demonstrations of military modifications could be possible within the next couple of months. The investor and chief strategic advisor of Foundation is Eric Trump, son of U.S. President Donald Trump, which gives the project particular political weight.
The current version of the humanoid — the Phantom MK-1 — is still far from combat use. Key limitations include short battery life, lack of protection against water and dust, and instability when manipulating complex objects. Nevertheless, Foundation envisions its robots as fighters for logistics, reconnaissance, facility inspection, and, in the future, participation in combat operations.
Weapons Plans and Autonomy
Pathak reported that the company is exploring "several kinetic solutions." This term refers to weapon systems, but for now, it is only about conceptual developments, not finished products. Notably, for most operations involving weapons, a human will need to confirm the decision to open fire. The exception will be systems requiring lightning-fast reactions, such as intercepting drones or missiles. Thus, Foundation does not rule out fully autonomous use of force in certain scenarios, although the company has not yet presented public rules or technical limitations for such functions.
Technical Readiness: From Lab to Battlefield
The Phantom MK-1 stands about 175 cm tall, weighs 80 kg, and can carry up to 20 kg of cargo. The next version, the MK-2, planned for 2026, is expected to have protection against external elements. However, according to experts, real combat deployment is still far off. Rodney Brooks, professor emeritus at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a robotics pioneer, argues that transitioning from a lab demonstration to reliable deployment in an unfamiliar environment takes at least 10 years. This assessment sharply contrasts with Foundation's ambitions, which plan to begin military use of humanoids within 12-18 months.
Financial Fog: $24 Million or a Portfolio of Projects?
Earlier, Fox Business reported that Foundation received a Pentagon contract worth $24 million. However, an analysis reveals a different picture. The company provided information about two contracts inherited from Boardwalk Robotics (which Foundation acquired) and three projects through the Institute for Human and Machine Cognition. No confirmation was found that Foundation independently won a new contract for the full amount. It is about a cumulative portfolio of related projects. The official SBIR registry only confirms Boardwalk's contract with the U.S. Air Force for $1.8 million.
Senator Elizabeth Warren has already called the president's son's ties to a defense contractor "corruption in plain sight." Eric Trump, in turn, is an investor and chief strategic advisor to Foundation.
Production Plans: From 40 to 50,000 Robots
Foundation's ambitions extend far: the company attempted to raise up to $500 million at a valuation exceeding $3 billion. It has stated goals of producing up to 50,000 humanoids by the end of 2027, or 30,000 machines annually. However, in 2025, Foundation plans to produce only about 40 robots. Achieving the stated targets would require not just scaling, but a true industrial miracle.
My analysis: The Foundation project looks like an ambitious but extremely risky initiative. The connection with Eric Trump provides powerful political capital but simultaneously creates reputational risks. The technical unpreparedness of the robots for real combat tasks, the questionable structure of contracts, and the fantastical production plans suggest that we are dealing more with a high-profile PR project than a real military revolution. The humanoid robot market is in its infancy, and Foundation, despite the hype, has yet to prove it can turn its promises into working machines.
