The Cardano (ADA) ecosystem is taking a historic step: IOG, the company that served as the blockchain's primary developer, has officially transferred control of the network's reference node, written in Haskell, to the community. This event marks the completion of a critically important stage in the project's evolution.

IOG emphasizes that the Cardano protocol and governance system have long been operating in a decentralized manner. Now, the engineering development itself has also been decentralized. Project founder Charles Hoskinson characterized this transition as the "final stage of the Voltaire era," noting that preparations for the transfer of authority have been underway since 2024. The final completion of the governance change process is scheduled for 2027.

A key aspect of this transformation is the abandonment of a monopoly on the code. According to the plan, several independent teams will maintain at least three different implementations of Cardano, using the Haskell, Rust, and Go stacks. This not only increases the network's resilience to single points of failure but also stimulates competition and innovation at the base protocol level.

The transfer of rights took place on the eve of the activation of the Van Rossem hard fork, which was approved by the community with an impressive result of 77.63% of the votes. The upgrade, scheduled for the evening of July 18, will transition the network to protocol version 11 and introduce new features in Plutus smart contracts aimed at significantly reducing their execution costs. The market reacted positively to this news: over the past day, the ADA rate rose by almost 4%, reaching the $0.16 mark.

It is worth noting that earlier this year, the Cardano Foundation faced a serious challenge, canceling the Cardano Summit 2026 in Singapore due to a failed on-chain vote on event funding. This incident only underscored the relevance and importance of the current transition to full decentralization of governance.
