The Russian banking sector is on the verge of fundamental changes. The country's largest financial institutions have already completed the technical preparation of infrastructure for conducting cross-border settlements in cryptocurrency. This is no longer a hypothesis—it is a reality that is about to trigger a mechanism of fierce market competition.

Key insight was shared by Dmitry Vitman, COO of the corporate and investment banking unit at Alfa-Bank. According to him, all leading players are on the home stretch: the technical part is fully ready. The problem is not in software or capacity, but in the fact that entering the market simultaneously will create a "red ocean"—an environment where all competitors are already armed to the teeth and ready to fight for every ruble of the client base.

"Red Ocean" and the race for primacy

Vitman emphasizes: at Alfa, competition is perceived not as a threat, but as a driver. When the market changes, one can gain a share precisely through this transformation. However, the first to make a public move will gain a colossal advantage. The rest will have to catch up in conditions where the audience is already "warmed up."

But infrastructure readiness is only half the equation. According to the expert, the main difficulty lies in generating demand from scratch. Unlike digital financial assets (DFAs), which were introduced gradually, cryptocurrency settlements require a large-scale educational campaign.

Who will be the first client?

The first clients, as expected, will be companies already familiar with the crypto world: miners and importers working with jurisdictions where cryptocurrency is legally accepted. However, the bulk of corporate clients are still far from understanding the mechanics. They will need to be explained the principles of pricing, comparing new tools with familiar SWIFT transfers and letters of credit.

"A large number of clients need to be trained, visited, and explained to, with fairly low returns in the initial stages," notes Vitman. This means that banks will have to invest significant resources in market education before they see real profits.

My analysis. The market for cross-border crypto settlements in Russia is not just a new product, but a tectonic shift. The one who first offers a clear, safe, and cheap service may not just capture a share, but reshape the entire structure of international payments in the country. The race is starting, and the stakes are extremely high.
