The main barrier to implementing cryptocurrency payments in Russian foreign economic activity (FEA) is not technological complexity, but a complete lack of formed demand. The market essentially has to be built from scratch, and this process is moving much slower than many digital asset enthusiasts would like.
The key problem lies not on the side of Russian businesses, but on the side of foreign counterparties. Foreign suppliers, as a rule, do not need cryptocurrency — they require fiat money. Geopolitical pressure certainly pushes Russian companies to seek alternative payment instruments, but the initiative must come from both parties to the transaction.
First wave: miners and importers from "crypto-friendly" jurisdictions
The first to adopt crypto payments are those segments that already have experience with digital assets. These are primarily mining companies, for which cryptocurrency is an integral part of their business model. They are joined by importers working with jurisdictions where the level of cryptocurrency adoption is significantly higher: the Middle East, Kyrgyzstan, Hong Kong, Indonesia. These companies have already encountered cryptocurrency in their practice, understand the mechanics of transactions, and are ready to accept payments in digital assets.
However, the situation with the corporate market is radically different. Simply offering payment in bitcoin or stablecoins is not enough. An ordinary corporate client requires a long and detailed explanation of the very essence of the instrument, pricing principles, volatility, and a comparison with familiar fiat channels. This turns every potential deal into a lengthy educational process.
A long road from conversation to deal
The process resembles the launch of the digital financial assets (DFA) market several years ago, when the infrastructure and understanding of the product were completely absent. The path from the first conversation to a specific transaction turns out to be extremely long, and the return in the early stages is minimal. Mass demand does not arise on its own; it must be purposefully created, forming in businesses an understanding of the advantages and security of cryptocurrency payments.
Expert opinion: The market for crypto payments in Russian FEA is in its infancy, and its development will be determined not so much by technological solutions as by the ability of market participants to overcome the inertia of thinking and educate counterparties. For now, this is a niche story for those already "in the know," but without scaling to the corporate sector, a full-fledged breakthrough will not happen.
