Netflix paid $587 million for Ben Affleck's AI startup: a deal that changes the industry

Streaming giant Netflix has made one of the biggest deals in the field of artificial intelligence, acquiring the startup InterPositive, founded by Hollywood actor and producer Ben Affleck. The deal was valued at approximately $587 million and closed back in March. This is direct confirmation that Netflix is not just observing the AI revolution but actively investing in it.

As part of the agreement, Affleck has taken on the role of senior advisor to Netflix. Along with him, 16 startup specialists — developers, researchers, and creative experts — have joined the streamer's team. This is not just a technology purchase but a strategic talent acquisition.

"From the invention of moving pictures to digital solutions, from motion capture to virtual production, technology has always evolved alongside artists," Affleck noted in an official statement.

InterPositive, launched in 2022, specializes in training large language models on filmed material. The startup's tools accelerate post-production: mixing, lighting work, and adding visual effects. The company has already been involved in creating commercial videos, music clips, and major video projects.

Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos confirmed that around 300 of the service's projects released in 2026 used some form of generative AI. As an example, he cited the documentary series The American Experiment — the use of InterPositive technologies halved production time and budget. At the same time, Sarandos emphasized that Netflix does not seek to replace human labor but merely complements it.

Analytical Commentary

This deal is a signal to the entire market: AI in the film industry is becoming not just a trend but a necessity. Netflix is paying nearly $600 million not for "hype" but for specific tools that have already proven their effectiveness. However, it is worth remembering that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences recently banned films using AI from participating in the Oscars. This creates an interesting paradox: technology accelerates production but may limit recognition. In the long term, deals like this one will shift the balance of power in Hollywood.
