Over the past weekend, the escalation of tensions between the US and Iran triggered a traditional reaction in traditional markets: oil prices rose amid fears of supply disruptions, the US dollar index (DXY) stabilized near the 100.7-point mark, and US Treasury yields remained high (two-year notes around 4.15%, ten-year notes around 4.45%). However, the cryptocurrency sector showed remarkable calm.

Bitcoin is steadily holding in the range of $62,500–63,000, while Ethereum is near $1,850–1,880. The market barely reacted to the geopolitical shock. And this is not a coincidence, but a pattern I have been observing for several months now.

Markets are overestimating geopolitical risks

Gold, a traditional safe-haven asset, even slightly depreciated amid the escalation. This suggests that investors are currently seeking a balance between hedging risks and being willing to take on risk. Cryptocurrencies, in turn, are increasingly being perceived not as "digital gold" in the classical sense, but as an independent asset class with its own dynamics, becoming less dependent on Middle Eastern conflicts.

The key factor behind this resilience is institutional demand. Over the last trading session, spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded a net inflow of over $130 million. Open interest in the futures market remains high, funding rates are moderately positive, and the volume of liquidations is relatively low.

Cryptocurrencies hold positions due to spot demand

This combination of factors indicates that support is primarily driven by real spot investments rather than speculative leverage. This significantly reduces the likelihood of sharp price swings due to mass liquidations — a classic scenario for the crypto market in the past.

In the near term, the main driver will remain macroeconomic events, especially if further rises in oil prices continue to impact inflation expectations and investors' views on future Fed policy. However, continued inflows into ETFs and a balanced derivatives market situation show that institutional demand remains resilient.

My expert assessment: The market is demonstrating maturity. Whereas previously any geopolitical shock caused panic and sell-offs, we are now seeing rational behavior from major players. Bitcoin is ceasing to be a "one-day asset" for speculation and is gradually transforming into a tool for long-term value storage. It is this, not momentary news, that determines its current trajectory.
