LSE prepares for night shift: London Stock Exchange to respond to tokenization challenge in 2027

The London Stock Exchange (LSE) has announced plans to launch a separate night trading session starting in the first half of 2027. This move is a direct response to the expansion of the tokenized asset market, which already provides investors with round-the-clock liquidity and access to trading without being tied to traditional exchange hours.

The new platform will operate from 17:00 to 7:50 local time, with a half-hour technological break. Initially, investors will have access to exchange-traded products linked to the UK and US markets. Thus, the LSE aims to capture a portion of the capital flow that is moving toward decentralized and tokenized solutions operating 24/7.

From my perspective, this is a landmark acknowledgment of the obsolescence of the "9-to-5" model by one of Europe's oldest financial institutions. The tokenization of real-world assets (RWA) and cryptocurrency markets have long proven that liquidity cannot tolerate interruptions. The LSE is forced to adapt, otherwise it risks losing institutional players who are already actively testing hybrid and fully digital platforms.

However, it is important to note: the launch of night trading is merely a tactical move. The strategic battle will be over the very infrastructure of settlement and clearing, where blockchain solutions offer radically different speeds and costs. We will see whether the LSE can compete not only in terms of operating hours but also in efficiency.
