Tether Gold has been granted regulated commodity status in the Abu Dhabi financial center.

Tokenized gold Tether Gold (XAUT) has received official recognition as a permissible spot commodity within the Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM). This step paves the way for licensed financial institutions to legally offer services related to this digital asset.
The ADGM decision is a significant signal for the market. Granting the status of a "permissible commodity" means that XAUT now meets the strict regulatory criteria of a jurisdiction aiming to become a global hub for digital assets. For investors, this reduces legal risks and increases the instrument's liquidity, as local brokers and custodians can now include it in their product lines without fear of violating the law.
Previously, ADGM had already performed similar work with Tether's stablecoin USDT, recognizing it as a permissible instrument pegged to fiat currency. Thus, the jurisdiction is consistently building a regulatory framework for two key classes of tokenized assets: digital counterparts of fiat money and digital counterparts of precious metals.
From my perspective, this decision is not merely a formality. It lays the foundation for the institutional adoption of tokenized commodities. While retail investors often view XAUT as a niche product, the regulatory status in ADGM could attract major institutional players from the Middle East who are seeking reliable and regulated ways to hedge risks through gold without physical logistics.
