The tokenized gold asset Tether Gold (XAUT) has received official regulatory status as a permissible spot commodity within the Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM). This decision paves the way for licensed financial institutions to legally offer services related to this digital asset.

This step is a logical continuation of ADGM's policy to integrate crypto assets into the traditional financial ecosystem. Previously, the center had already recognized the stablecoin USDT as a permissible instrument pegged to fiat currency, setting a precedent for digital currency regulation in the region.

What does this mean for the market?

The recognition of XAUT in Abu Dhabi is not just a formality. Tokenized gold, backed by physical bars, can now be used by institutional investors as a legitimate tool for risk hedging and portfolio diversification. For the issuer Tether, this is an important step in expanding the geography of its regulated presence, especially amid growing demand for stablecoins and commodity tokens in the Gulf countries.

From an analytical perspective, the ADGM decision could accelerate the adoption of similar regulatory frameworks in other financial centers in the Middle East. XAUT, serving as a bridge between classic gold and blockchain, gains an advantage over competitors thanks to its clear legal status.

My expert opinion: Regulatory clarity for XAUT in ADGM is a signal to the market that tokenized real-world assets (RWA) are becoming a full-fledged part of institutional infrastructure. Over the next 12 months, we will likely see a wave of similar recognitions for other commodity tokens, which will strengthen liquidity and confidence in this segment.
