Tether Gold (XAUT) Receives Official Commodity Status in Abu Dhabi Global Market

The sphere of institutional adoption of digital assets continues to expand. The tokenized gold asset Tether Gold (XAUT) has been officially recognized as a permissible spot commodity in the Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM). This decision paves the way for licensed financial institutions to offer services related to this instrument.

What does this mean for the market?

This status is not just a formality. It allows ADGM-regulated brokers, custodians, and exchanges to legally include XAUT in their product lines. In effect, this is recognition of tokenized gold on par with physical precious metals within the jurisdiction of one of the world's leading financial hubs.

Previously, ADGM had granted a similar status to the US dollar-pegged stablecoin USDT. Thus, the regulator is consistently building a legal framework for key categories of digital assets: fiat stablecoins and commodity-backed tokens.

Analytical Perspective

This move by ADGM demonstrates the maturity of the Middle Eastern regulators' approach to digital finance. XAUT, backed by physical gold stored in Swiss vaults, receives an institutional "blessing," which could serve as a catalyst for an influx of conservative capital. In my view, we are witnessing the beginning of a bridge being built between traditional commodity markets and the DeFi ecosystem — with the UAE acting as a pioneer in this regard.
