Wrench attacks on cryptocurrency investors: home invasions have become the main threat, according to Cryptalist

Cryptalist's analytical department has completed a study on the dynamics of physical attacks on cryptocurrency asset owners for the first half of 2024. 52 cases of so-called wrench attacks were recorded — assaults using force or threats aimed at coercing the transfer of digital funds. The number of such incidents increased by 33% compared to the same period last year.

The most alarming trend is a sharp rise in the number of home invasions. While only one such intrusion was recorded in the previous period, their number reached 20 in the first half of 2024. This indicates an escalation in criminal aggression, as attackers move away from street assaults in favor of more calculated and dangerous operations inside victims' homes.

The total damage from all recorded wrench attacks amounted to $124.1 million. Geographically, France proved to be the most dangerous region, accounting for 33 incidents. Such a high concentration of attacks in one country is likely linked to the active local crypto community and insufficient security measures among wealthy investors.

Cryptalist Analytical Commentary: The current dynamics indicate that criminals are adapting to digital protection methods by shifting to direct physical coercion. Owners of large cryptocurrency assets are strongly advised to review their personal security protocols, including concealing information about their wallets and using multi-signature solutions that render physical attacks pointless without access to multiple keys. Ignoring this trend could lead to further escalation of violence.
