Physical attacks on crypto investors: 33% increase, home invasions become the main threat — CertiK analysis

In the first half of 2024, we recorded 52 cases of so-called wrench attacks — physical assaults aimed at forcing cryptocurrency asset owners to transfer their funds. This is a 33% increase compared to the same period last year. A particularly alarming trend is the sharp rise in home invasions: from one case to twenty. The total amount associated with these incidents reached $124.1 million.

Geographic analysis shows that France was the most affected country, accounting for 33 attacks. This concentration raises questions: it may be linked to the high activity of local crypto communities or insufficient awareness of physical security risks.

Home invasions are the most dangerous type of wrench attack, as they occur in environments where victims feel most vulnerable. In 2023, such cases were rare, but now they account for nearly 40% of the total. This is a signal for all market participants: digital security must go hand in hand with physical security.

Scale of the Threat and Lessons for the Community

It is important to understand that $124.1 million represents only confirmed losses. The actual figure may be higher, as many victims do not report such incidents due to fear or shame. The rise in attacks underscores the need for preventive measures: avoiding public disclosure of large crypto holdings, using multi-signature wallets, and storing significant amounts in cold storage with physically secured access.

Expert opinion: The current trend reminds me of the "gold rush" era, when physical security became a critical survival factor. The crypto industry must invest not only in code and smart contracts but also in educating users on the basics of personal safety. Ignoring this aspect will lead to a further increase in violent crimes.
