Pittsburgh is preparing for a breakthrough: a $5 million hybrid quantum supercomputer, TangleLab.

The Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center has received a $5 million grant from the U.S. National Science Foundation to build the hybrid TangleLab system. This is not just another cluster—the project will combine classical HPE computing power with a nine-qubit Rigetti Novera quantum processor, opening new horizons for the symbiosis of the two architectures.
Funding has already been approved, and construction is scheduled to begin on September 1. Full system deployment is expected in 2027. A key feature of TangleLab is accessibility: researchers, educators, and students will have direct access to the hybrid environment, along with training and technical support.
Why is this important for the crypto industry?
Although the project is not directly related to blockchain, hybrid quantum systems could radically change the landscape of cryptography. A nine-qubit processor is still a modest figure, but TangleLab lays the groundwork for testing algorithms resistant to quantum attacks. It is precisely such experiments in academic settings that often become catalysts for industrial solutions.
From my perspective, the NSF's investment in hybrid computing is a signal to the market: the era of post-quantum security is approaching faster than many expect.
