Ethereum is preparing a fundamental privacy upgrade: relayers are leaving, developer protection reaches a new level

The Ethereum ecosystem is entering a new phase of evolution, where privacy and legal protection for developers are becoming not just options, but built-in properties of the protocol. The key vector of change is a complete abandonment of relayers, the intermediaries that have until now played the role of "postmen" in private protocols. This step not only enhances transaction confidentiality but, more importantly, strips regulators of their main leverage used against creators of decentralized services.

MetaLeX Labs lawyer Gabriel Shapiro rightly notes that relayers were the most vulnerable point in legal attacks on developers. Their existence gave authorities a formal pretext for claims, arguing that the code is not fully autonomous and that a "controlling party" exists. Eliminating these intermediaries is not just a technical improvement but a strategic move that makes accusations against developers practically untenable.

This direction is actively supported within the Ethereum Foundation. Organization representative Toni Wahrstätter confirmed that the upcoming Hegota upgrade, scheduled for next year, will integrate private applications directly into the base layer of the network. This marks the end of the era of trusted intermediaries and a transition to a model where code operates independently, without the possibility of external interference.

According to research by soispoke, the technical implementation relies on four key improvements that are expected to be included in Hegota: FOCIL, Frame Transactions, Keyed Nonces, and Recent Roots. The central role is given to FOCIL, a mechanism that distributes the right to include transactions in a block not to a single validator but to a random group. This makes censorship practically impossible. The other three components complement the picture, enabling hidden transactions without disclosing data to a trusted third party.

Analyst's opinion: Ethereum's move toward "native privacy" is a far more significant step than it appears at first glance. It is not just about protecting user data but about fundamentally rethinking the security model for developers. By removing relayers, Ethereum strips regulators of their main argument and simultaneously lays the foundation for creating truly uncensorable and legally protected applications. If Hegota delivers on its promises, we will witness the birth of a new standard of decentralization, where privacy and freedom from intermediaries are embedded in the protocol itself.
