Quantum threat without a trace: the first attack may go unnoticed

The crypto industry could face its first quantum hack without even realizing it. Analysis shows that an attack using a quantum computer could masquerade as a banal key leak, drastically complicating threat identification.
The Invisible Threat to Blockchain
Theoretically, a powerful quantum machine could recover a private key using only public data already exposed on the blockchain. In such a case, the attacker gains full control over funds without breaching a wallet, device, or exchange's internal systems. It is precisely the absence of classic intrusion traces that becomes the main indicator that a quantum attack occurred, rather than an ordinary theft.
This creates a serious problem for recording the so-called "Q-Day"—the moment when quantum computers begin cracking standard public-key cryptography. If a well-protected organization is attacked, the only sign could be the complete absence of traces of a classic hack.
Attackers' Targets: Not Just Satoshi's Bitcoins
Contrary to popular belief, hackers' first target is unlikely to be Satoshi Nakamoto's "dormant" bitcoins, estimated at around $65 billion. Far more attractive are military systems, state secrets, or administrative keys in the crypto industry. For example, Tether's USDT issuance key is an ideal target for destabilizing the market. Exchange hot wallets are also at risk: stealing from them would draw less attention than moving coins belonging to bitcoin's legendary creator.
A Race Against Time
The situation is exacerbated by rapid progress in this field. Google's recent breakthrough using AI reduced the estimated computational resources needed to attack elliptic curve cryptography, accelerating post-quantum migration plans to 2029.
Expert forecasts on timelines vary: some estimate a 50% probability of a quantum scenario by 2028, while others call the early 2030s almost inevitable. Meanwhile, the parallel development of AI and quantum technologies only increases the risks.
My analysis: The industry is under the dangerous illusion that we have time to prepare. But if the first attack indeed goes unnoticed, we could lose precious months recognizing the threat, making the post-quantum transition even more chaotic and costly.
