Neural networks in healthcare: Moscow region's AI has checked over a million medical prescriptions

The Moscow region has become one of the flagships in implementing artificial intelligence in the healthcare system. Over the past six months, a digital assistant based on neural networks has checked over one million medical prescriptions, marking an important step in automating quality control of medical care. This is not just an experiment, but a full-fledged working practice that is already yielding tangible results.

How the verification system works

The tool, launched in February 2026, operates in automatic mode and analyzes each prescription against 15 key criteria. These include drug compatibility, compliance with the patient's age and gender, as well as risks of overdose or exceeding recommended treatment durations. The algorithm activates at the moment a prescription is issued, whether during an in-person appointment or a telemedicine consultation, and cross-checks the patient's data against the prescribed medications, signaling potential threats before the person receives the drugs.

It is important to emphasize: the technology does not replace the doctor, but merely enhances their capabilities. The final decision on the treatment plan always remains with the specialist. This is a fundamental stance that alleviates many concerns about the "robotization" of medicine. In essence, AI acts as a highly qualified assistant that guards against errors and helps choose the optimal therapy strategy.

AI in Russian healthcare: a large-scale trend

The Moscow region is not the only area where neural networks are being integrated into clinical practice. Similar projects are developing both at the federal level and in individual regions. For example, in Moscow, about 200 medical AI services have been tested over six years, 67 of which are already operating in hospitals. More than 2,000 clinics from 75 regions have connected to the city platform "MosMedAI," which provides access to radiology diagnostic algorithms for imaging.

The market is also attracting major players. At the end of July, Yandex registered LLC "Yandex Med" to develop medical software. Their digital assistant transcribes conversations between doctors and patients, searches a knowledge base, and prepares a brief summary from the medical history. This confirms that interest in medical AI from technology giants is only growing.

The use of neural networks extends beyond clinics as well. Recently, they were used for the first time to assemble complete genomes of bacteriophages—viruses that infect bacteria. Of these, 16 samples proved viable under laboratory conditions. This opens new horizons for biotechnology and personalized medicine.

My view: Such initiatives are not just a trend, but a necessity for modern medicine. Automating routine checks reduces the burden on doctors and minimizes the human factor, which is critically important amid a growing patient flow. However, the success of such systems depends on the transparency of algorithms and trust from the medical community. Implementing AI in healthcare is a marathon, not a sprint, and the Moscow region is making a confident bet on it.
