Elon Musk: AI agents will take over internet traffic, pushing humans to the sidelines of the network.
Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk has made a resonant statement: in the coming years, the volume of traffic generated by artificial intelligence-based agents will far exceed the activity of live users. In his view, this is not just a likely scenario, but an inevitable evolution of the digital ecosystem.
The comment came in response to a forecast by Cloudflare CFO Thomas Seifert. The latter, summarizing the second quarter, stated that humanity online would become a "statistical rounding error." According to his calculations, if current growth rates hold, non-human traffic could surpass user traffic a thousandfold within five years.
Notably, reality is already outpacing expectations. Not long ago, Cloudflare assumed that machine traffic would only exceed human traffic by 2027. However, the tipping point came much earlier—already in May 2026. This points to the rapid expansion of AI agents into all spheres of online interaction.
Economic impact and new data
The impact of this trend extends far beyond web analytics. Analysts at ARK Invest forecast that by 2030, AI agents will account for nearly 25% of all digital spending, whereas in 2025 this figure stood at only about 2%. According to the company's estimates, by the end of the decade, agents will process online commerce transactions worth up to $8 trillion.
Independent research confirms this trend. The HUMAN Security report for 2026 records an eightfold higher growth rate for automated traffic compared to user traffic. From January to December 2025, the monthly volume of AI agent traffic grew by 187%, with more than 95% of it concentrated in three key sectors: retail and e-commerce, streaming and media, and tourism and hospitality.
Data from Imperva (Bad Bot Report 2026) shows that in 2025, 53% of web traffic already consisted of automated requests. Fastly paints a similar picture: in January 2026, bots accounted for 49% of all requests, with services flagging 99% of them as unwanted.
My analysis: We are witnessing a fundamental shift that carries both opportunities and risks. On the one hand, AI agents increase efficiency and open up new markets. On the other, the growth of "shadow" traffic requires a rethink of approaches to cybersecurity and user verification. Investors should closely watch companies that can monetize this new reality rather than merely defend against it.
