Elon Musk: Will the internet soon belong to AI agents — reality or inevitability?
Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk has taken an unequivocal stance on the future of internet traffic: in the coming years, the activity of AI agents will far exceed that of live users. This is not just a hypothesis, but an inevitable scenario for the network's evolution, which I fully share, observing the current pace of automation.
Musk backed the forecast from Cloudflare's CFO, who recently cited a striking figure. According to his calculations, within just five years, non-human traffic could exceed user traffic by a thousandfold. He aptly noted that in this case, people would become merely a "rounding error in internet statistics."
Reality has exceeded expectations
Notably, Cloudflare's initial estimates suggested that machine traffic would only overtake human traffic by 2027. However, actual data shows that this milestone was already surpassed in May 2026. This indicates that the adoption of agentic technologies is happening much faster than we anticipated, and the market needs to urgently adapt to the new reality.
The scale of AI agents' impact goes far beyond simple web browsing. According to ARK's analytics, by 2030 they will account for nearly 25% of all digital spending, whereas in 2025 that figure was only about 2%. In my assessment, this will lead to agents processing transactions worth up to $8 trillion in online commerce by the end of the decade.
Independent data confirms the trend
My observations are also backed by independent research. The HUMAN Security report for 2026 demonstrates that automated traffic is growing eight times faster than user traffic. From January to December 2025, the monthly volume of AI agent traffic grew by 187%, with more than 95% concentrated in three key sectors: retail, streaming, and travel.
Imperva data shows that in 2025, 53% of all web traffic came from automated requests. Fastly analysts also recorded that bots accounted for 49% of all requests in January 2026, with 99% of them deemed unwanted. This creates serious challenges for security and infrastructure.
My expert assessment: The market stands on the brink of a fundamental transformation. Investors and developers need to rethink approaches to user verification, data protection, and monetization. Those who fail to adapt to the era of the agentic economy risk being left behind within the next two to three years.
