AI on the Route: Putin Puts Neural Networks at the Service of Russia's Public Transport
Russian authorities are betting on artificial intelligence as a key tool for modernizing public transport. President Vladimir Putin has ordered the active implementation of AI technologies to forecast passenger flows, optimize schedules, and build route networks, calling this a way to radically improve the efficiency of the entire industry.
This statement was made during the head of state's working trip to Ulan-Ude, where a meeting of the Presidium of the State Council dedicated to the development of the transport sector was held via video conference. The focus was not only on current problems but also on strategic digitalization tasks.
What exactly has been ordered to implement
This is not just about automation, but about the systematic application of machine learning algorithms. In my assessment, the most promising area here is predictive analytics: neural networks are capable of processing colossal volumes of data on citizen movements, which allows not just reacting to changes in demand but anticipating them. This makes it possible to flexibly redistribute rolling stock and avoid both overcrowding and transport downtime.
Separately, the president emphasized the problem of fragmented quality standards. To date, only 34 federal subjects have adopted the relevant regulations. In this regard, the government, together with the State Council, will have to develop a unified list of service quality indicators for all regions. These criteria will become the basis for an objective comparison of transport system performance across the country and will form the foundation of the updated national project "Infrastructure for Life."
The AI market: figures and prospects
The president's instruction is a logical continuation of the general course toward economic digitalization. The Russian artificial intelligence market is demonstrating impressive dynamics: in 2025 it grew by 29.7%, reaching a volume of 316.1 billion rubles. According to the baseline forecast of the analytical agency AIANA, by 2030 this figure could reach 830 billion rubles, and under a favorable scenario, surpass the 1.12 trillion ruble mark.
The implementation of AI is also changing the structure of the labor market. According to estimates by Sber experts, generative neural networks could add up to 1.2 percentage points to labor productivity growth, with the greatest effect achieved in office professions. Interestingly, physical labor — drivers, mechanics, loaders — will remain outside the direct influence of algorithms, making the transport industry a unique platform where AI acts not as a replacement for humans but as their intelligent assistant.
In parallel, the state is building regulatory frameworks: a working group on copyright has already been established under the government, which will determine the conditions for training models on protected content and the rules for ownership of generated materials. This is an important step for the legalization and further scaling of AI solutions.
My comment: Transport is an ideal testing ground for AI. Here, algorithms work with clear, structured data, and the economic effect of optimization is visible almost immediately. The question is not whether AI will be implemented, but how quickly regions can unify their standards and prepare infrastructure for collecting high-quality data. This is precisely what will determine whether Russian transport becomes a global benchmark of efficiency or remains just a pilot project.
