AI in Every Bus: Putin Launches Digital Revolution in Russia's Public Transport
Russia's transport sector is on the brink of a large-scale digital transformation. President Vladimir Putin, during a meeting of the State Council Presidium held via video conference from Ulan-Ude, gave a clear signal: artificial intelligence should become a fundamental tool for modernizing public transport across the country. This is not just a wish, but a direct instruction that will radically change the approach to managing passenger transportation.
What exactly did the president instruct
The key task is to deploy machine learning algorithms to solve applied industry challenges. This involves forecasting passenger flows, optimizing schedules, and route networks. According to the head of state, such technologies will make it possible to "radically improve the efficiency" of public transport operations. This means that instead of dispatchers' intuitive decisions, precise, data-driven models capable of adapting to real demand in real time will come into play.
Putin separately emphasized the issue of quality standards. To date, only 34 federal subjects have adopted the relevant regulations. The president instructed the government, together with the State Council, to develop a clear list of service quality indicators for the regions. These criteria will serve as a basis for comparing authorities' performance in the transport sector. In addition, adjustments will need to be made to the national project "Infrastructure for Life," filling it with specific benchmarks.
AI market: figures and prospects
This instruction is only part of a systematic state policy to introduce artificial intelligence into the economy. And this course has a solid economic foundation. The Russian AI market has shown impressive growth: by the end of 2025, it grew by 29.7%, reaching a volume of 316.1 billion rubles. According to the baseline forecast of the analytical agency AIANA, by 2030 this figure will rise to 830 billion rubles, and under a favorable scenario, it could surpass the 1.12 trillion rubles mark.
The adoption of neural networks is already changing the labor market. Estimates from Sber analysts show that generative models will add 1.2 percentage points to productivity growth, with the greatest effect achieved in office professions. Physical labor—drivers, mechanics, loaders—will remain outside the direct influence of algorithms. In parallel, the state is building the legal framework: a working group on copyright has been established under the government, which will determine the conditions for training models on protected content and the rules for owning generated materials.
Transport is becoming another practical platform for AI. Demand forecasting, schedules, and routes are tasks where algorithms process vast amounts of data faster and more accurately than humans.
My view: The initiative is timely, but success will depend on data quality and the regions' readiness for digital maturity. Without standardization and staff training, even the most advanced algorithms risk remaining a beautiful presentation rather than a working tool.
