Another victim of decentralized finance has lost a substantial sum — about $550,000 in USDC. The incident occurred with a Hyperliquid user who fell victim to a phishing attack disguised as an advertisement in the Google search engine.

How the scam scheme works

The attackers placed an ad in Google Ads leading to a fake website that visually replicates the interface of a popular DEX platform. The victim, not noticing the trick, clicked the link, interacted with the counterfeit interface, and ultimately granted access to their funds. After that, the attackers instantly withdrew assets from the trader's wallet.

This case is not an isolated one. Scammers are increasingly using paid ads in search engines to promote fake crypto platforms. This tactic allows them to bypass traditional filters and appear at the top of search results, creating a false sense of legitimacy among users.

Lessons for the crypto community

This incident highlights the critical importance of verifying domain names and using official links from trusted sources. Even if a website looks flawless and appears on the first page of search results, that does not guarantee its authenticity. For working with DEX platforms, I strongly recommend using browser bookmarks or direct links from the project's official documents, as well as checking the URL for minor differences from the original.

Additionally, it is worth considering the use of hardware wallets and additional layers of security, such as multi-signature or address whitelists. In the world of DeFi, where the user fully controls their assets, a single mistake can cost the entire deposit.
