The Harvard endowment has frozen the reduction of its Bitcoin positions: what this means for the market

Harvard University's endowment, one of the world's largest institutional investors, has made an unexpected decision: holding its exposure to bitcoin ETFs at the previous quarter's level. According to my analysis of the latest 13F filing data submitted to the SEC, as of June 30, the fund retained 3.04 million shares of BlackRock's exchange-traded product IBIT. In dollar terms, that is $101.4 million—exactly the same as three months earlier.

Note the context: until now, Harvard had shown a steady trend of reducing its crypto holdings. At the end of 2025, the position was cut by 21%, and in the first quarter of 2026, by another 43%. That trajectory pointed to a systematic withdrawal from digital assets. However, we now see a clear pause in this process, which may indicate a reassessment of the fund's strategy.

Another curious detail: in parallel, Harvard increased its investments in gold ETFs. As of the reporting date, they stood at $171.2 million versus $101.4 million in the bitcoin product. This means the classic safe-haven asset still dominates the fund's portfolio, but the gap between them is narrowing—a quarter earlier, it was more significant.

From my expert perspective, the halt in position reduction is a signal the market should not ignore. Harvard, as a benchmark institutional player, often acts ahead of the curve. If the fund has stopped selling at current levels, it likely sees potential for stabilization or even growth in BTC. That said, maintaining a significant overweight in gold suggests caution remains a priority.
