Chinese tech giant Alibaba has reached a landmark milestone: the total number of downloads of its open-source AI models from the Qwen family over the past six months has exceeded 3 billion. This impressive figure propels the Chinese corporation to the absolute leader in popularity among developers worldwide.
The scale of the ecosystem is staggering: more than 460 Qwen neural networks are publicly available, and third-party specialists have created over 300,000 derivative models based on them. This is not just statistics, but evidence of a powerful community forming around Qwen, which actively uses these developments as a foundation for its own innovations.
Numbers That Speak Louder Than Words
Analyzing the latest data from the Hugging Face platform reveals an even more detailed picture. In just the first seven months of this year, Qwen models were downloaded 2.05 billion times, and the number of their derivative repositories reached 151,448. For comparison, the closest competitor Google has only 82,506. When it comes to total downloads for 2026, Google has amassed 418 million, while Meta has 227 million. It is important to understand that Hugging Face statistics only account for activity within its own ecosystem, excluding API requests and enterprise deployments, making Qwen's real impact even more significant.
The growth rate of Qwen derivative models remains consistently high: their number increases by 180-210 daily. Notably, out of 28,531 GGUF conversions (a specialized format for local deployment), only 54 were created by Alibaba itself — the rest is the community's achievement. As analysts rightly point out, Qwen has become an integral part of the standard workflow for developers choosing a base model for fine-tuning.
The Secret to Success: Strategy, Not Coincidence
Qwen's leadership is explained by three key factors. First, regular and timely updates to the model lineup. Second, an incredible breadth of coverage — from compact versions with sub-billion parameter counts to the giant Qwen3.8-Max with 2.4 trillion parameters. Third, and perhaps most importantly, the use of the Apache 2.0 license, which removes all restrictions on modification and commercial use.
It is precisely the breadth of the lineup that has become the decisive factor. According to statistics, 83% of all downloads on Hugging Face come from models with fewer than 1 billion parameters, while giants over 100 billion account for only 1%. Competitors focused solely on creating massive LLMs, such as Moonshot AI, lag significantly behind: their annual downloads of 37 million are 55 times fewer than Qwen's. In the local deployment segment (GGUF), Qwen also dominates with 39.6 million monthly downloads, compared to 20.8 million for Gemma and 7.5 million for Llama.
A Paradigm Shift in Global AI
This report clearly demonstrates the shifting balance of power in open AI. Chinese models surpass American ones in size almost every month: their ceiling ranged from 754 billion to 2.78 trillion parameters, while US competitors did not exceed 130 billion in five out of seven months. Additionally, 59% of Chinese models with more than 20 billion parameters are released under the open Apache 2.0 license, and 22% under MIT, with no restrictions on commercial use. In the US, the picture is reversed: 41% of such models are under proprietary terms, and 30% have no specified license at all.
Remarkably, in the US, the main generators of new open models have not been AI labs but chip manufacturers — AMD and Nvidia, each releasing over 200 repositories. This indicates that the center of innovation gravity in the open segment has definitively shifted to Asia.
