UBS has ramped up bets on bitcoin's rise: exposure to call options on IBIT has grown 24-fold.

Swiss banking giant UBS is demonstrating an impressive shift in its strategy toward digital assets. According to my analysis of fresh regulatory data, by June 30 the bank's exposure to call options on BlackRock's spot bitcoin ETF IBIT reached 1.95 million shares. This is a colossal leap—24 times higher than the 80,000 shares recorded the previous quarter.

Such aggressive growth in bullish bets signals a fundamental reassessment by institutional players of the first cryptocurrency's short-term potential. Notably, UBS is not just expanding derivatives but also increasing direct investments: its position in IBIT itself grew by 12% to 407,890 shares, equivalent to roughly $13.6 million at current prices. In parallel, the bank cut protective put options by 53%—down to 143,300 shares—indicating reduced hedging against downside risks.

This dynamic suggests that UBS, traditionally conservative on crypto assets, now views bitcoin not as a speculative instrument but as a strategic asset with expectations of significant growth. The 24-fold increase in call options is not merely a portfolio adjustment but a clear signal to the market that big capital is preparing for an upward move. The reduction in puts alongside rising direct purchases creates an asymmetric risk profile tilted toward optimism.

In my professional opinion, UBS's actions could become a catalyst for other institutional investors who have been waiting on the sidelines. When a systemic player like a Swiss bank increases its bullish derivative leverage twenty-fourfold, it creates a powerful psychological effect. Combined with the overall trend toward approval and adoption of spot ETFs, this strengthens my confidence that we are on the brink of a new wave of institutional legitimization of bitcoin, and current levels could prove to be an entry point for a broader range of market participants.
