QpiAI launches serial production of quantum chips in India — up to 10,000 qubits by 2027

India's technology sector is taking a decisive step into the future: QpiAI has officially opened a manufacturing facility in Bangalore focused on producing quantum processors. This event marks not just a local breakthrough, but a strategic move that could reshape the balance of power on the global map of quantum computing.

Scale and Ambitions

In its initial phase, the enterprise will focus on producing superconducting "flip-chips" with architectures of up to 128 qubits. However, this is only a starting point. According to the project's roadmap, by 2027 the third phase of expansion is expected to elevate capacity to a fundamentally different level—up to 10,000 physical qubits in a single processor. If these plans come to fruition, India will join a select group of countries capable of competing with leaders like IBM and Google in the race for quantum supremacy.

Investment and Technological Foundation

The project's financial cushion is already impressive: roughly $20–25 million has been invested in infrastructure. But capital expenditures do not end there. QpiAI's management has announced additional investments of $10–15 million, which will be directed toward critical stages of production—lithography, etching, assembly, and chip packaging. In parallel, the company intends to intensify research in three key areas: superconducting, photonic, and semiconductor qubits. This diversified approach reduces technological risks and allows for flexible responses to shifting paradigms in the industry.

The choice of Bangalore as the manufacturing base deserves special attention. The city has long established itself as India's "Silicon Valley," boasting a robust ecosystem of engineering talent and research institutions. Localizing production here is not just a logistical convenience, but also access to the talent that will serve as the driving force for scaling.

From my perspective, the ambitious goal of 10,000 qubits looks extremely optimistic, given the current global pace of technological development. However, the very fact of creating a specialized plant outside the US and China is an important signal. It indicates that the quantum race is no longer the exclusive domain of superpowers, and India intends to carve out its own niche, betting on long-term investment and technological independence.
