While the market showed subdued dynamics, events occurred in the industry that could set the direction for the coming weeks. Quantum giant Jane Street disclosed massive investments in bitcoin ETFs, the Farcaster protocol faced an existential crisis, and Compound is launching a record-breaking program to attract institutional investors.
Market Picture: Calm Before the Storm?
Bitcoin (BTC) traded around $64,172 by the morning of August 18, showing a modest 1.21% gain over the day. Overnight trading occurred in a narrow range of $63,950–$64,460, indicating consolidation after recent moves. Ether (ETH) remained virtually flat at $1,894, with a minimal decline of 0.16% and a brief dip to $1,885.
The day's laggard was Worldcoin (WLD), which plunged 11.69%. Among the leaders, Venice Token (VVV) stood out with a 10.21% gain, along with Polygon (POL) and Morpho (MORPHO), which rose 5.52% and 3.44%, respectively.
Flows into spot ETFs were positive: bitcoin funds attracted $137.32 million, Ethereum products — $4.95 million, and Chainlink (LINK) — $2.07 million. Positions worth $224.25 million were liquidated over the day, with shorts suffering more ($140.94 million versus $83.32 million for longs).
Institutional Signal from Jane Street
The key news was Jane Street's disclosure: the company holds shares in spot bitcoin ETFs worth over $1 billion as of June 30. About $828 million is in BlackRock's IBIT fund, with the rest distributed across Fidelity (FBTC) and Grayscale (GBTC) products. This is not direct bitcoin ownership, but an important signal: the largest Wall Street market makers are increasingly using regulated instruments for exposure to digital gold.
Farcaster Seeks a New Owner
The operator of the Farcaster protocol, Neynar, is looking for a new owner just seven months after acquiring it from Merkle Manufactory. The reason is a catastrophic decline in revenue: gross revenue collapsed from $35.43 million in the first quarter of 2026 to $377,000 for the period from July 1 to August 17. Along with the protocol, the new owner will be offered the Clanker token launch platform and developer services.
Compound Bets on Institutional Investors
The Compound protocol's DAO approved a record budget of $52 million for a new team and development program. Under the leadership of Executive Director Aaron Schnarch, the project is targeting institutional lending, including support for real-world assets (RWA) and tools for embedding on-chain lending. Since its launch in 2018, the protocol has processed about $480 billion in deposits and loans.
My analysis: Jane Street's disclosure is not just numbers in a report. It is confirmation that traditional financial giants view bitcoin ETFs as a standard capital allocation tool. As for Farcaster — the 99% revenue decline in a matter of months shows how fragile monetization can be in decentralized social networks. Compound's ambitions, however, look timely: institutional DeFi is the next big frontier, and $52 million is a serious bid for leadership.
