Cypherpunk Technologies has officially announced the creation of a new mining division, Cypherpunk Mining, which will focus on mining the anonymous cryptocurrency Zcash (ZEC). The total equipment capacity is already impressive — about 4.2 GSol/s, which, by my estimates, constitutes approximately 18% of the network's total hash rate. This is not just a bid for leadership, but an actual capture of a significant share of the computing power of one of the key projects in the privacy sector.
Deal Details and Strategic Move
The new division includes modern Z15 Pro units, as well as associated hosting contracts. The acquisition of assets was carried out through a subsidiary of Cypherpunk Mining from Moria Mining. The transaction amount was $33.33 million, but the settlement was not made in cash, but through a prepaid warrant to purchase 43.29 million Cypherpunk shares with an exercise price of $0.001 per share. Interestingly, in valuing the deal, the company's shares were accounted for at $0.77, indicating complex financial engineering and a long-term bet on market capitalization growth.
It is important to note that Moria Mining is connected to Winklevoss Treasury Investments — a structure affiliated with brothers Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss. At the time of the deal, Winklevoss Treasury Investments already owned 19.9% of Cypherpunk's shares, underscoring the deep integration of interests of major institutional players in this project.
Leadership and Ambitious Plans
Kevin Zhang has been appointed to lead the new mining direction, having previously worked with Bitcoin and Zcash, as well as developed a pool and infrastructure at Foundry. His experience in building large-scale mining operations will be key to implementing the company's ambitious strategy.
Cypherpunk's main goal is not just mining, but accumulating reserves. As of August 18, the company already held 323,394.38 ZEC, which is about 1.92% of the total coin supply. The stated goal is to increase this share to 5%. Given that the network distributes about 43,800 ZEC monthly as mining rewards, such a level of hash rate control will allow the company to systematically grow its reserves.
Market Reaction and Context
The price of ZEC did not react to this news — over the past day, the token has fallen by 1.1% and is trading around $506. However, Cypherpunk's own shares rose by 9%, indicating investors' positive assessment of this move. Notably, on July 28, the Ironwood upgrade was activated on the Zcash mainnet, which launched a new shielded pool after a critical vulnerability was discovered in Orchard. This adds context: the strengthening of mining capacity is occurring during a period of technical upgrades and network security reinforcement.
My analysis: The consolidation of 18% of the hash rate in the hands of one company is a serious signal for the market. On one hand, it increases network centralization, which contradicts the spirit of decentralization, but on the other, it shows confidence from major players in the long-term value of Zcash. If Cypherpunk achieves its goal of 5% of the supply, it could create significant pressure on liquidity and affect price dynamics in the medium term.
