The anonymous cryptocurrency market continues to consolidate, and today we are witnessing a landmark event for the entire Zcash ecosystem. Cypherpunk Technologies has officially announced the launch of a specialized mining division, which immediately claims the status of the largest player in this niche. The total capacity of the new infrastructure reaches an impressive 4.2 GSol/s, which, by my estimates, is equivalent to approximately 18% of the total ZEC network hash rate.
At the core of the fleet are the latest Z15 Pro ASIC units, supplemented by hosting contracts. The acquisition of assets was structured through the subsidiary Cypherpunk Mining, with Moria Mining acting as the seller. The transaction amount was a solid $33.33 million, but the settlement was made not in fiat currency, but through a prepaid warrant for 43.29 million Cypherpunk shares with a nominal exercise price of $0.001 per share. At the same time, the shares in the deal were valued at $0.77, which underscores the long-term nature of the agreements.
Of particular interest is the connection between Moria Mining and Winklevoss Treasury Investments, a structure affiliated with brothers Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss. At the time of the deal, this structure already controlled 19.9% of Cypherpunk shares, indicating a deep integration of the interests of major institutional players in the project.
Strategy and Reserves
Kevin Zhang has been appointed head of the new division, whose background includes work with Bitcoin and Zcash, as well as the development of a pool and infrastructure at Foundry. This appointment is a clear signal of the seriousness of the company's intentions.
Cypherpunk's key goal is not just mining, but building up its own cryptocurrency reserve. As of August 18, the company held 323,394.38 ZEC, which is about 1.92% of the total coin supply. The ambitious plan is to bring this share to 5%. For context: the network distributes approximately 43,800 ZEC monthly as mining rewards, so the task requires significant resources.
The market reaction has been restrained: over the past 24 hours, the ZEC price has declined by 1.1%, trading around $506. At the same time, Cypherpunk's own shares jumped by 9%, indicating that investors positively assess precisely the corporate development.
Let me remind you that on July 28, the Ironwood update was activated on the Zcash mainnet, which launched a new shielded pool after fixing a critical vulnerability in Orchard. This adds context: the current infrastructure growth is occurring against the backdrop of strengthening network security.
My comment: Such a large-scale entry of an institutional player into Zcash mining is a double signal. On the one hand, it confirms long-term confidence in the value of anonymous coins, especially amid tightening privacy regulations. On the other hand, the concentration of 18% of the hash rate in one hand raises questions about decentralization that the Zcash community will have to address in the near future. For retail miners, this could mean increased difficulty and market consolidation.
