The prediction platform Kalshi, known for its niche approach to event contracts, has made a bold move toward traditional capital markets. I have carefully reviewed the application filed with the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), and this is not just a formality — it is a signal of the platform's maturity and its ambitions to go beyond predicting political outcomes.
Two flagship products: US500 and COPPERPERP
At the heart of the proposal are two perpetual futures contracts that radically expand Kalshi's toolkit. The first, US500, is tied to the MerQube US Large Cap index, which covers the 500 largest issuers in the United States. This is a direct analogue of the classic broad market, but in a format familiar to crypto traders — with no expiration date and continuous position holding.
The second contract, COPPERPERP, is far more intriguing. It is based on the spot price of copper in dollars per pound, using a price feed from the Pyth Network (XCU-USD). The choice of a blockchain-based oracle for such a traditional asset as an industrial metal is, in my view, a telling trend: even classic exchange products are increasingly integrating with decentralized data infrastructure.
An analytical look at the strategy
Kalshi's decision to turn to perpetual futures is not just an expansion of its product line. It is an attempt to capture liquidity that is currently migrating between crypto exchanges and regulated platforms. Perpetual contracts, which dominate digital assets, are here receiving their first serious institutional framework within a U.S. regulator.
However, it is worth noting: if the CFTC approves the application, it will set a precedent that could open the gates for other platforms seeking to tokenize or adapt TradFi products. But the key risk is copper's volatility and potential discrepancies between the oracle and real exchange quotes. Yet, it is precisely such nuances that distinguish pioneers from followers, and here Kalshi is clearly playing ahead of the curve.
My verdict: this is a strategically sound move that could redefine the perception of prediction platforms as purely speculative sandboxes. If the product takes off, we will see a wave of imitators, but for now — this is an exclusive bet on the synthesis of two worlds.
