US President Donald Trump held a meeting with leaders of the crypto industry and the technology sector at the White House on Wednesday, August 19. The focus was on the decentralized perpetual futures exchange Hyperliquid. The head of state publicly confirmed that regulators are actively working to bring the platform to the US market on fully legal grounds. The market reacted instantly: the exchange's native token HYPE surged more than 6% within a few hours.
Political signal and the role of the CFTC
Trump specifically thanked the Chairman of the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), Michael Selig, for leading the legalization process. Among the guests were also top executives from Coinbase, Ripple, and Nasdaq, as well as SEC Chairman Paul Atkins. In his speech, the president emphasized: "I understand that Mike is working on bringing Hyperliquid to the US fully legally and transparently."
Selig himself promised to reveal the regulatory details on Thursday. The date was not chosen by chance: on August 20, the first meeting of the CFTC's Advisory Committee on Innovation will take place in Washington. The agenda includes crypto assets, artificial intelligence, and predictive markets.
Why this matters for Hyperliquid
Currently, the platform blocks users from the US, considering them restricted persons under its terms of use. However, access to the largest derivatives market could radically change Hyperliquid's position. American traders dominate futures trading, and their inclusion could bring a significant influx of liquidity and fee revenue to the ecosystem.
Preparation for this event has been underway for several months. In July, the Hyperliquid Policy Center, together with the Phantom wallet, filed a petition with the CFTC requesting that DeFi protocols be exempted from outdated exchange rules. This is the first time decentralized finance has been brought to the level of federal regulation as a separate asset class.
Market reaction and resistance
Over the past 24 hours, HYPE has risen more than 6% and is trading around $68.19. The token's market capitalization stands at approximately $15.1 billion—ranking tenth among all crypto assets. In May, HYPE overtook Dogecoin for the first time, entering the top 10.
However, not everyone supports this scenario. CME Group and the owner of NYSE—ICE—are advocating for stricter control over the platform, citing risks of manipulation and potential sanctions-related consequences. Compliance issues remain open: registration, KYC procedures, and leverage limits are difficult to apply to non-custodial on-chain trading.
The nearest catalyst will be the committee meeting on Thursday. If Selig presents specific conditions rather than general principles, this will determine the further dynamics of HYPE.
My analysis: Trump's statement is not just PR. It is a signal that the administration views Hyperliquid as a strategic asset in the race for leadership in digital finance. However, the path to legalization will be thorny: a compromise between decentralization and CFTC requirements may demand serious concessions from the platform, which will create volatility in the medium term.
