The cryptocurrency market is experiencing an impressive shift in sentiment. The Fear and Greed Index jumped 16 points in a day, reaching 62, which corresponds to the "greed" zone. This is one of the sharpest swings in emotional tone for all of 2026, and it is directly linked to bitcoin's powerful rally.
The leading cryptocurrency rose 11.7% over the past 24 hours, approaching the key level of $71,850. This momentum could not help but ripple across the entire market: Ethereum, Solana, and XRP posted even more impressive gains, rising 19.6%, 13.25%, and 14.3%, respectively. Bitcoin's market capitalization, meanwhile, grew to $1.44 trillion.
Anatomy of the sharp index jump
The index is calculated based on five factors, but volatility and market momentum played the decisive role in this case, each accounting for 25% of the final score. Both of these indicators sharply reversed direction as prices moved upward, triggering such a rapid shift in sentiment.
The key trigger was the forced buyback of short positions. During the sudden rally, short liquidations reached approximately $1.23 billion — traders who had bet on a decline were forced to close positions at higher prices, which only amplified the upward impulse. Social media activity and search queries, which make up another quarter of the index's weight, also began to rise, signaling the return of retail interest.
Why the euphoria may be premature
However, such a sharp shift in sentiment should be treated with caution. Just a week ago, the index stood at 29, and a month ago at 25, i.e., in the "extreme fear" zone. Throughout July and early August, it barely rose above 35. Such a rapid transformation from panic to greed is itself a warning sign.
Moreover, liquidity is not recovering as quickly as emotions. Stablecoin reserves on exchanges have declined by roughly 20%, meaning fewer available funds to cushion a potential drop. Market structure also offers no clear signals: bitcoin's dominance has been testing support levels since July, and the debate over the start of altcoin season remains unresolved.
The index rarely moves 16 points without consequences. One day of greed proves nothing on its own, and the coming sessions will show whether buyers hold at current levels or fear returns as quickly as it left.
My analysis: The sharp jump in the index is a classic signal that the capitulation phase has ended, but it is not a guarantee of a sustained bullish trend. Against the backdrop of shrinking stablecoin reserves and uncertainty over BTC dominance, the current rally may be nothing more than a volatile rebound within a downtrend channel. A sensible strategy is not to chase the price but to wait for trend confirmation on daily timeframes.
